Dalyan, meaning fishing village in
Turkish is a
small and unspoiled little town on the Southwest coast of Turkey.
It is about 35 minutes drive
from Dalaman International Airport.
In
ancient times, there was a harbour and a
city named Caunos that was founded in the
6th C BC. Caunos was an important city of the
Caria region. There are also 4th C BC rock-cut tombs in Dalyan which
you can see while
cruising the river by boat.
The
main feature of Dalyan is the river with
the rustling reeds, home to a variety of fish
and birds. The popular mud baths containing
sulphur are said to make you look younger and
more beautiful. Dalyan is the meeting place of
the Aegean and Mediterranean Seas. It has a
long and sandy beach. It is one of the few
beaches left on the Mediterranean coastline
where Loggerhead turtles lay their eggs.
Part of the famous movie, African Queen
starring Humphrey Bogart was also filmed here.
